Karakachan Guardian Dogs

The Karakachan dog breed originated in Bulgaria and dates back to the 3rd millennium BC.  They are very intelligent and independent with low prey drives making them great livestock protectors.  They typically do not roam off their farm and are aggressive toward anything they deem a threat to their livestock or family.  Karakachans were first imported into the United States just 20 years ago (2004), due to this they can be hard to find here.  Karakachans have a double coat allowing them to adapt well to all environments.  They have a lifespan of 12 to 14 years and tend to reach maturity at about 3 years of age.  Males typically weigh between 88 and 120 lbs and stand between 25 and 30 inches tall.  Females typically weigh between 66 and 99 lbs and stand between 24 and 27 inches tall.

MIA

Mia is a white and red female (born October 7, 2022, AKDA 2468).  She weighed 80 lbs as of January 2024.

She has a very calm serious demeanor and is always watching and working.  She loves her sheep and frequently spends hours napping out in the pastures with them while they graze or watching them from higher areas.  When she was little I walked the fence lines with her daily, she now walks them on her own and has taught Jaeger to do the same.

 JAEGER

Jaeger is a white and black male (born April 13, 2023, AKDA 2803). He weighed 103 lbs as of January 2024.

He has a very goofy playful demeanor and is always looking to snuggle no matter how muddy he is.  He's still too young to be left with the sheep unattended but he loves them and is always aware of where they are and ready to go after threats.

Swarts Farm is a member of the American Karakachan Dog Association (AKDA).
